Yoga is notorious for its ability to clear the mind while also building strength, flexibility, and focus. Some do it to connect with their spirituality or inner self, while others do it purely for fitness reasons.

But whatever your reasons behind practicing yoga are, most yogis agree that it has many benefits, all of which have the ability to change lives in powerful ways. And for those who have experienced this on a personal level, you know that it doesn’t get much better than attending a yoga retreat.

And yoga in Costa Rica is a match made in heaven.

Costa Rica is a hotbed of beach yoga studios, yoga for beginners, and open-air yoga retreats nestled within the country’s lush jungles and seaside establishments. Seriously, what better place to connect with yourself and nature than a place with so much natural beauty?

The country’s breathtaking views, soothing crashes of waves, and exotic jungle sounds make it a tranquil and exciting place to practice the art of yoga.

Whether you’re a fan of Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Kundalini, (and even if you have no idea what any of that means), there is sure to be a yoga studio in Costa Rica that has a retreat to fit your experience level and preference.

Secluded Yoga Spots in Costa Rica

The Osa Peninsula’s secluded, peaceful, and laid-back vibe makes it ideal for a yoga retreat.

The Iguana Lodge is an extremely sought-after yoga destination with two scenic yoga studios – one which offers beach yoga, and one by the pool. While the lodge offers complimentary yoga classes daily, it’s also home to a myriad of retreats hosted throughout the year.

Also located on the Osa Peninsula, the Blue Osa offers an incredibly serene environment where guests can sit back, relax, and savasanna. The Blue Osa’s Hatha-tradition trained instructors are also well versed in many other practices for travelers of all experience levels!

Ojo Del Mar is another quaint yoga hot spot on the Osa Peninsula, offering daily sessions of Hatha Yoga on their open-air wooden deck shaded by palm and almond trees – right on the beach!

Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula is another uber-popular yoga destination. It’s home to the Horizon Yoga Hotel (a hill-top gem overlooking the ocean) with yoga classes offered on the property’s highest point.

The Anamaya Resort, an exotic hotel that sits on top of a cliff overlooking the ocean (surrounded by waterfalls and rainforests in every other direction) is also located on The Nicoya Peninsula. Anamaya offers a Soul Surfer Retreat and Surf Camp, which combines these two famous Costa Rican pastimes in an amazingly perfect, fun, and good-for-the-soul way.

Mainstream Yoga Spots in Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s secluded rural regions aren’t the only places that have incredible yoga spots. These next few retreats are located in some of the most populated and easy to get to places in Costa Rica.

San Jose’s Ama Tierra Retreat & Wellness Center offers a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere that isn’t too far from the conveniences of the big city. Ama Tierra’s yoga classes are held in a spacious open-air studio overlooking the rainforest, with hatha-style classes taught for guests of all experience levels.

The Ahki Yoga Sanctuary in Guancaste is a sacred space, built “specifically according to the ancient science of Vastu Shastra, the ‘yoga of space’, invoking peace, wellness, and harmony – with the environment as well as with one’s self.” Whether or not that means anything to you, there’s no denying that this studio’s open and scenic space is an absolute dream for any yoga enthusiast!

These yoga retreats are a choice selection among many incredibly relaxing and scenic yoga destinations, so feel free to take a chance on one of the less-acclaimed studios in the region. Whether you prefer yoga on the beach, by the pool or in the jungle, it’s hard to go wrong in Costa Rica.
